Chavs: The Demonisation of the Working Class, by Owen Jones. Reading thread.

Note: this post is updated as I read, starting from when I first open the book. All opinions are not final until the final update and summary.

Saturday, 30 July 2016.

I have currently read up to about page 40, including both prefaces; as this is the 2016 edition, and the introduction. And I have to say the prefaces and introduction alone were amply illuminating. It must be strange for Owen Jones a 26 year old man, at the time of writing, to be the voice for so many. For so many years I have felt the media mistreatment of the working class and have suspected many a journalist goes out of their way to find one caricature example and blow it up in order to alienate the public from each other, but only now have I found a writer who has put those thoughts and niggles into words, only now have I seen them printed, in book form and sold in Waterstones for any old raisin to pick up. And I must say I’m finding the experience of reading something so in tune with my own thinking as quite, quite empowering.
